Brandeis University is a Massachusetts Jewish[2] private university founded in 1948.[3] The school describes itself as a "Private research university with a liberal arts focus."[3] The university's notable graduates include a Nobel laureate, a Pulitzer Prize winner, school presidents, a Prime Minister, Emmy winners and many others.[4] The school ranked #31 in US News's 2008 "National Universities: Top Schools" list.[5]
History
The school is named for former Supreme Court justice Louis Dembitz Brandeis - the first Jewish justice.[6][7][2] In 1985, Brandeis was elected to membership in the Association of American Universities, which represents the 62 leading research universities in the United States and Canada.[7]
Athletics
The school's mascot, Ollie the Owl,[8] is named after Louis Brandeis's colleague, Oliver Wendell Holmes.[9] Brandeis competes in the University Athletic Association (UAA), a unique Division III affiliation.[10]
