Fox Derangement Syndrome

Fox Derangement Syndrome is an idiomatic phrase used to refer to wildly exaggerated overreaction to the news, opinion shows, and very existence of the Fox News Channel. Although the term did not exist at the time, a good example occurred during the December 1, 2003 broadcast of Hardball with Chris Matthews, in which liberal Democrat political commentator Chris Matthews asked liberal Democrat politician Howard Dean, "Would you break up Fox?", to which Dean replied: "On ideological grounds, absolutely yes."[1]

Political commentator Michelle Malkin used the phrase on her website on February 16, 2006.[2] Journalist Bernard Goldberg uses it as a chapter title of his book Crazies to the Left of Me, Wimps to the Right: How One Side Lost Its Mind and the Other Lost Its Nerve, which was reviewed by U. S. News and World Report.[3]

Fox Derangement Syndrome has been said to have been shown by Keith Olbermann,[4] Al Franken, Janeane Garofalo, Chris Matthews, Angelina Jolie, John Edwards, Howard Dean, Robert Greenwald,[5] and USA Today's blog.[6] The administration of Barack Obama was not only very blunt about its Fox Derangement, but openly waged a campaign of attacks against the network.[7]

A similar phrase used to describe similar baseless hysteria, anger, and fear of Donald Trump by liberals (in many cases, to extreme levels) is called Trump Derangement Syndrome and became publicly evident (particularly among the liberal media[8] and Hollywood celebrities[9][10]) during and after the 2016 presidential election.[11][12][13]
