On February 14, 2008, a "white male armed with a handgun and a shotgun" opened fire in a lecture theatre.[5] The gunman killed five (four females and one male) and injured twelve before taking his life.[6] NIU campus police chief Donald Grady said the gunman was not a student at the school and that police had no apparent motive.[6] It was the fourth shooting at a US education establishment within a week,[5] and the second time NIU had faced violence in two months (when a student left racial attacks and references to the Virginia Tech shootings on a bathroom wall).[6]
