Hegar announced in late April 2019 her run for U.S. Senate to challenge Republican John Cornyn.[1] The Senate campaign wing of the Democrat establishment backed her in December 2019 over all other Democrat candidates in the race,[2] sparking strong criticisms that the primary, as well as several others related to the 2020 Senate elections, was being rigged to destroy the chances of black candidates, including West.[3] After no candidate initially won a majority of the vote, Hegar proceeded to won the primary runoff to face Cornyn in the general election.[4] West, who says that Hegar has a "problem" with black voters,[5] announced that he would not vote for her in the general election.[6] This matter was pointed out in a campaign ad by Cornyn.[7]

According to Hegar, U.S. border policies are comparable to Chinese concentration camps.[8]
