See: 2020 United States Senate election in Texas

Hegar announced in late April 2019 her run for U.S. Senate to challenge Republican John Cornyn.[2] The Senate campaign wing of the Democrat establishment backed her in December 2019 over all other Democrat candidates in the race,[3] sparking strong criticisms that the primary, as well as several others related to the 2020 Senate elections, was being rigged to destroy the chances of black candidates, including West.[4] After no candidate initially won a majority of the vote, Hegar proceeded to won the primary runoff,[5] and faced Cornyn in the general election. West, who said that Hegar "had a problem all along" with black voters,[6] announced that he would not vote for her in the general election;[7] this was pointed out in a campaign ad by Cornyn, who contrasted his support for reforms in the police and criminal justice systems to Hegar being out-of-touch and "wrong for Texas".[8]

According to Hegar, U.S. border policies are comparable to Chinese concentration camps.[9]

As was mostly expected, Hegar lost the general election to Cornyn despite being heavily backed by liberal donors.[10]
