James Oliver Eastland (November 28, 1904 - February 19, 1986) was a Democrat Senator from Mississippi who served in the United States Senate in 1941; and again from 1943 until his resignation on December 27, 1978. He has been called the "Voice of the White South" and the "Godfather of Mississippi Politics."[1] A segregationist, Eastland was known as a resistance leader to racial integration, often speaking of African Americans as "an inferior race."[2]
Eastland was a friend and mentor to Sen. Joseph Biden of Delaware and advanced his early career.[3] Biden often sought advice and assistance from Eastland.[4] According to Biden, Eastland called him, "son" and not "boy".[5]
