An ionophore is a compound which forms a lipid-soluble complex in order to transport ions among and through biological membranes. (Lipid-soluble means soluble in fats or fatty tissue, as opposed to water-soluble.)

Quercetin is an ionophore for zinc and the combination may possibly help treat COVID-19, if used very early after exposure, although some are skeptical of that effect.[1] One study published by Cesidio Giuliani et al. in January 2014 cautions against patients who are hypothyroid or pregnant from using quercetin.

Green tea, which is consumed more in Japan than any other country while Japan has held its mortality down to 1/50th of that in the United States, has been suggested as an excellent natural ionophore for zinc in combatting COVID-19.[2]
