Earth Day was founded by Senator Gaylord Nelson (D-Wis.) proposed Earth Day April 22, 1970, after the National Environmental Policy Act was signed into law January 1, 1970. Nelson writes [1]

That day left a permanent impact on the politics of America. It forcibly thrust the issue of environmental quality and resources conservation into the political dialogue of the Nation. | ” |
The first Earth Day was held on the 100th birthday of Vladimir Lenin.
Obama Stats
Barack Obama wants to be known as the environmental president. He celebrated Earth Day by burning more than 9,000 gallons of fuel.[2]
