Walter Ulbricht (1893 - 1973) was the Communist dictator of the German Democratic Republic and head of the Socialist Unity Party of Germany. He played a keyrole at the foundation of the Warsaw Pact. In 1961 Ulbricht built the Berlin Wall to stop the refugee flood to West Berlin. Ulbricht gave up his post in 1971 and was replaced by Willi Stoph.[1]
