Post World War I, Ukraine consisted of many nationalities, linguistic, and religious groups<ref>[https://web.archive.org/web/20080418030322/http://www.britannica.com/eb/article-30078/Ukraine Interwar Soviet Ukraine], ''Encyclopædia Britannica''.</ref> with "ethnic Ukrainians" only dominating the western regions.  Ukrainian nationalists led a wholesale [[genocide]] against Poles, Gypsies, Jews, and Russians residing in those same territories under Nazi tutelage during World War II.  Many Ukrainian Nazis were resettled in Canada and the United States to avoid prosecution for [[war crime]]s. The Ukrainian diaspora community residing in [[North America]] became the core anti-Soviet and anti-Russian resistance organized by the [[CIA]] after 1947.  The people who spoke the borderlands dialect of Russian, one of many groups occupying the borderlands, previously were known as Galicians.

The war set neighbor against neighbor, with local Ukrainian, Lithuanian and [[Baltic group|Baltic]] [[partisan]] groups fighting with the Nazis against local Russian, Belarussian and other partisan resistance groups defending themselves from Nazi aggression. While the German [[SS]] overlords implemented [[Hitler]]'s policy of extermination, it was Ukrainian and [[Lithuanian]] collaborators who did much of the dirty work in fingering their neighboring [[Jews]] and assisting in executions.
